Ubuntu User Accounts and Mouse Theme

Posted by Raymond Bustamante on August 2, 2009

UbuntuIn any case that I would put-up an internet cafe someday I don’t want to spend on software licences.  So instead of using Windows as my operating system, I’ll will use Ubuntu, Firefox and OpenOffice.  So how to create user accounts that will not have any admin rights?   Thanks to Ralph Joseph Moncatar for explaining to me that it is possible.  How to add more Mouse Themes?  Thanks again to Ralph for helping me with Linux commands for copying folders from one directory to another.

First, how to create User Accounts:
Step 1: Activate root if you haven’t yet.  If you don’t know how, click here.
Step 2: On the same window, click [+ Add User]
Step 3: In the Accounts tab, enter the needed information (i.e. “guest”)
New User Account - Account
Step 4: In the Advanced tab, on the Main Group dropdown menu, select “guest”
Account 'guest' properties - Advanced
Step 5: Click [Ok]
You can now log-off and login using the “guest” account.
Second, how to add new mouse themes:
Note: These may not be the most optimized way, but this is how I did it.
Step 1: Download a mouse theme you like.  I got mine here.
Step 2: After the download, you will see it on your desktop.  It will have an extension *.tar.gz
Step 3: Right-click then select “Extract To…”.
Note: If you have enabled root access, you could select “/usr/share/icons”.  I think I have not, that’s why I extracted it right on my desktop.
Step 4: Go to Terminal
Step 5: Copy the folder to the icons folder by typing sudo cp -r foldername  /usr/share/icons Enter root password if prompted.
Step 6: Edit the index.theme by typing sudo gedit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme Enter root password if prompted
Step 7: Change what you see in the  texteditor windows that opens into something below:

[Icon Theme]
Inherits=foldername

Step 8: Save and Exit
Step 9: Log-off and Login
